DAVIS, Calif. -- Longwood University earned a 10-8 decision over host UC Davis in a women’s lacrosse match Monday afternoon in Davis, Calif. The Lancers, who are now 2-1 on the season, were led by junior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) who scored four goals in the contest. LU will be back in action when they face off against St. Mary’s Wednesday, March 16 in Moraga, Calif. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
UC Davis got on the scoreboard first when Katie McMahon scored her first of five goals 1:40 into the contest. Longwood tied the game three minutes later on a goal scored by Shafer, assisted by sophomore Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon). The Aggies pulled away from the Lancers slightly, scoring two consecutive goals; one by Megan O’Connor and another by McMahon, but LU responded, scoring three goals to reclaim the lead at 4-3 with 9:27 to play in the first half. Senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) started off the scoring with a goal at the 17:18 mark. Shafer then scored her second and third goals of the night; one 13 seconds after Dress and another at the 20:33 mark.
McMahon would not be outdone as she rattled off two more goals to give UC Davis back the lead at 5-4. The combo of Shafer and Strain combined for their third goal of the half to tie the game at 5-5 and then senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) notched her first goal of the contest to give the Lancers the 6-5 lead going into halftime.
Longwood pushed its lead to 7-5 three minutes into the second stanza when sophomore Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) scored her third goal of the season. UC Davis kept the game close, scoring a goal a little over a minute later, but goals by Cohen and junior Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) gave Longwood some breathing room at 9-6. The Aggies wouldn’t go away as O’Connor and McMahon both scored to get UC Davis within one of the Lancers at 9-8 with 14:06 to play in the game, but LU’s defense held strong over the final minutes and Barry added a final goal to seal the 10-8 victory over the Aggies.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the game making six saves for the Lancers; three in each half. Longwood held the 28-21 advantage in shots, while UC Davis had a slight 19-16 edge in ground balls.
