FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 9-2 baseball decision to visiting Old Dominion University Thursday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers dropped to 4-15 this season while the Monarchs improved to 12-6 with their road victory. Longwood will play again Saturday, March 12, hosting Saint Peter’s College at Lancer Stadium for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m..
Against Old Dominion of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), Longwood led early at 1-0 through two innings before the Monarchs scored four runs in the third inning to take control. ODU added single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh, and two more runs in the eighth inning. The Lancers gained one run back in the seventh inning.
Old Dominion was led by Matt Hudgins (4-5, 2 RBI) with four hits, including a solo home run in the fourth inning and an RBI double in the seventh inning. Tyler Belcher (3-5, 2 RBI) added three hits to the Monarchs’ 17-hit attack, including an RBI double in the third inning and an RBI single in the eighth inning. Bryan Cipolla (2-5, 4 RBI) had a pair of doubles and four RBI for the visitors, including a three-run double in the third inning. Bryan Hansen (2-1) earned the pitching win for ODU with the first 6.2 innings on the mound, allowing six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
Senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-4, RBI) and freshman Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-3) each collected two hits for Longwood as Balus had an RBI double in the first inning. von Gersdorff also had a double for the Lancers, while freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (1-3) added an RBI double in the seventh inning for LU. Freshman Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) (0-3) took the mound loss with the first 5.1 innings while yielding 10 hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts.
Longwood and Old Dominion were meeting for just the second-time ever, and the first time since 1988, a 7-2 setback to the Monarchs who now lead the overall series 2-0. The Lancers are scheduled to play at Old Dominion later this month on March 29.
