HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Longwood University dropped a 15-2 baseball decision at Hawaii Pacific late Monday night in Hawaii. The Lancers finished the season-opening, five-game series with a record of 1-4 against the host Sea Warriors. Longwood will play again this weekend, Feb. 11-13, at the University of South Carolina. The Gamecocks are ranked #7 in the preseason Sports Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll after posting a 53-17 record in 2004 while advancing to the College World Series.
Hawaii Pacific led 5-0 after two innings and never looked back en route to the 13-run victory past Longwood. Junior transfer Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (2-4) led the Lancers with two hits, while freshman Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4, RBI) contributed an RBI. Classmate Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (1-2, run) added a double for LU. Redshirt freshman Josh Simonds/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (0-1) took the mound loss while pitching the first 2.0 innings and allowing three hits and three earned runs.
Longwood’s three-game series at nationally-ranked South Carolina will be the first-ever meeting(s) between the Lancers and Gamecocks, as well as the highest ranked opponent ever faced by LU. The two programs will play single games on Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (1:30 p.m.), and Sunday (1:30 p.m.).
