Baseball Drops Two Games At Hawaii Pacific; 9-2, 6-3

Sophomore Tyler Childress Hits Two-Run Triple In Opener Against Sea Warriors

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Longwood University dropped a baseball doubleheader at Hawaii Pacific Sunday night in Hawaii, falling in the opener 9-2 and in the nightcap 6-3. The Lancers are now 1-3, and will play the five-game series finale against the Sea Warriors Monday at 5 p.m.. Longwood is opening its 2005 campaign in Hawaii with five games at Hawaii Pacific.

In the opener, Longwood was involved in a close game until host Hawaii Pacific scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Lancers had scored two runs in fourth inning to close to within 3-2 until the decisive sixth inning.  Sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) led LU at the plate with his 1-2 effort, including a two-run triple in the fourth.  Others collecting a hit included senior Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-3, double, run) and junior transfer Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (1-2, run).  Freshman Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) (0-1) took the pitching loss while making his first collegiate appearance.  Weiderman pitched 3.0 innings and allowed two hits and three earned runs with one strikeout.     
    
In the nightcap, Longwood again was involved in a close game and trailed just 4-3 into the bottom of the fifth inning before the Sea Warriors secured the win with insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) was 2-4 with an RBI for the Lancers.  Sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (1-3, RBI) and Mooney (1-3, two runs) each had a hit for LU.  Sophomore Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (0-1) took the mound loss while pitching 4.2 innings and allowing seven hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.
