Women's Basketball Falls 65-46 At Texas-Pan American

Senior Marita Meldere Scores Game-High 13 Points At Texas-Pan American

EDINBURG, Texas -- Longwood University dropped a 65-46 women’s basketball decision at Texas-Pan American Monday night.  Stacey Gooden led three players in double-figure scoring for the Lady Broncs (11-10) with 11 points, while senior Marita Meldere/Rujiena, Latvia (Lynchburg Christian) scored a game-high 13 points for the Lancers (10-12).  Longwood will play again this Saturday, Feb. 12, at Savannah State in Georgia beginning at 3 p.m..

Longwood led 10-6 at 16:56 of the first half on a layup from senior Catherine Dunn/Aberdeen, N.J. (St. John Vianney) and still was ahead 14-12 with 8:25 left in the opening period. Texas-Pan American, though, used an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the first half at 25-12 en route to a 27-14 advantage at the intermission.  
    
Longwood outscored the Broncs 18-12 to begin the second half to reduce the deficit to 39-32 with 11:07 remaining on a three-pointer from junior Amber Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne).  UTPA extended its margin again, this time to 53-37 at 6:13 before seven unanswered Lancer points brought the score to 53-44 with 4:26 left.  The Broncs, however, responded with 10 unanswered points of their own to lead 63-44 at 1:59 while securing the victory.

Meldere added six rebounds, three steals, and two assists to her game-high 13 points for Longwood.  Junior Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) added seven points and nine rebounds for the Lancers.  LU, which had defeated UTPA 54-47 in Farmville on January 28, shot 28% (14-50) from the field, including 3-18 on three-pointers, and 71% (15-21) at the line.

Gooden's 11 points included 5-8 shooting from the field for Texas-Pan American.  Devin Reed and Tynesha Pierce each contributed 10 points for the Broncs.  UTPA shot 41% (24-58) from the field, including 2-15 on three-pointers, and 68% (15-22) at the line.
