HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Longwood University splits its season-opening baseball doubleheader at Hawaii Pacific Saturday night in Hawaii, winning the nightcap 7-3 after dropping the opener 2-1. The Lancers begin the season 1-1, and will play another twinbill against the Sea Warriors Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. Longwood is opening its 2005 campaign in Hawaii with five games against HPU this weekend.
In the nightcap, Longwood exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning for the come-from-behind triumph. Sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) led the Lancers at the plate with his 2-4 effort, including a double, and three RBI. Other top hitters included freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (1-2, run, RBI) and senior Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-4, run, RBI). Freshman Rob Moody/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-0) earned his first collegiate pitching victory while making his first collegiate appearance in relief. Moody pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts. Sophomore Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (1) gained his first save this season with the final out, though he did walk a batter.
In the opener, Longwood could manage just one run, again in the top of the seventh inning. Mooney was 2-3 with a home run, while senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-3) also collected two hits for the Lancers. McCullough (0-1) took the mound loss in relief, pitching the final 2.0 innings and allowing one hit and one earned run with one strikeout. Freshman John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) had started his first collegiate game and pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.
