Baseball Defeats Visiting Saint Joseph's 10-1; Take Two Of Three Against Hawks

Freshman Joe Bott Collects Three Hits Against Hawks

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 10-1 baseball decision past visiting Saint Joseph’s Sunday at Lancer Stadium, securing its second victory in the finale of the three-game weekend series. The Lancers improved to 3-12 this season, led by freshman Joe Bott/Elyria, Ohio (Elyria Catholic) and his 3-4 effort at the plate, including two doubles. The Hawks dropped to 1-8 this season. Longwood will play again Tuesday, March 1, hosting VCU at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m..

For the second-straight day, Longwood jumped all over visiting Saint Joseph’s pitching staff and pounded 17 hits, including a home run, triple, and five doubles, en route to the home triumph. The Lancers led 6-1 through two innings, and 9-0 through five innings before the Hawks scored a run in the sixth inning to prevent the shutout. Longwood added its final run in the seventh inning.

In addition to Bott’s first two collegiate doubles among his three hits, sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (3-5) also collected three hits for the Lancers. Junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (1-3, 3 RBI) had the big blast for Longwood with his two-run home run in the fifth inning, a shot that hit off one of the trees well beyond the left field fence for his first home run at LU. Freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (2-4, 2 RBI) added two hits, including an RBI double in the first inning and an RBI single in the second inning. Also contributing two hits each for the Lancers were senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-4), along with sophomores Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-5, RBI) and Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-5, RBI).

Sophomore Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (1-2) earned the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run with one strikeout. Freshman Sean Quinn/Mainesville, Ohio (St. Xavier) pitched the final 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing a hit with two strikeouts.

Saint Joseph’s was led by Rob Pimpinella (2-4) who had two hits, and Adriano Petrutz (0-4, RBI) who had an RBI grounder in the sixth inning while reaching base on an error. Robert Unkel (0-3) took the mound loss with only the first 1.2 innings, yielding eight hits and five earned runs.

Longwood out-hit Saint Joseph’s 40-27 during the three games, and outscored the Hawks 20-14 while taking the two home victories (9-4, 10-1).
