FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 14-5 decision over visiting Bucknell in its season-opening women’s lacrosse match Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field. The Lancers, who are now 1-0 on the season, were led by senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) who scored five goals and added an assist. LU will be back in action when they face off against Virginia Tech Wednesday, March 2. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
Bucknell got on the scoreboard first when Emily Burman scored 2:36 into the game on a free position shot. Longwood tied the game a little less than a minute later when senior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) scored. The Lancers rattled off 11 more goals before halftime to hold a commanding 12-2 lead. Dress added a second goal, while Cohen tallied four goals, sophomore Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) and senior Leanne Kibler/Oakton (Oakton) notched two goals apiece, and sophomores Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and Missy Rumbley/Baltimore, Md. (Parkville) each added one.
The Bison scored quickly to open up the second half on a goal by Andrea Paraud at the 32:26 mark. Junior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) countered with her first goal of the season two minutes later to push LU’s lead to 13-3. Cohen closed out the scoring for the Lancers with her fifth goal of the game at the 42:09 mark.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the game making six saves for the Lancers; one in the first half and five in the second.
