Baseball Splits Two Against Saint Joseph's; Win Opener 9-4, Drop Nightcap 9-1

Senior Brett Mooney Collects Six Hits In Doubleheader Against Hawks

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader against visiting Saint Joseph’s Saturday at Lancer Stadium, winning 9-4 in the opener before falling 9-1 in the nightcap.  The Lancers are now 2-12 this season and will play the three-game series finale against the Hawks (1-7) on Sunday, February 27, at 1 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood pounded a season-high 18 hits while getting a combined 15 strikeouts from its two pitchers en route to the home triumph.  The Lancers led 3-1 through three innings, and 4-2 through four innings before Saint Joseph’s scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4.  Longwood responded with two runs in the seventh inning, and three more runs in the eighth inning to secure the win.      
    
Sophomores Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-4, 2 RBI) and Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-5, 2 RBI) provided the big hits for the Lancers as Childress had a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning for the game-winner.  Yarbrough got it started with a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning.  Senior Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (4-5, RBI) led the 18-hit attack with four hits, including a two-out RBI double in the eighth inning, while junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (3-4, RBI) collected three hits, including an RBI single in the fourth inning.  
    
Sophomore Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-0) earned the pitching win with the final 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts.  Freshman John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs with eight strikeouts.  Saint Joseph’s was led by Adriano Petrutz (3-5, RBI) who had three hits, including a solo home run in the first inning, and Nick Baldasari (1-5, RBI) who hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.  Ryan Hoagey (0-3) took the mound loss with the first 6.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs with four strikeouts.
    
In the nightcap, Longwood allowed four unearned runs to the Hawks in the first inning courtesy of two errors and the visitors led 9-0 through five innings en route to their first win of the campaign.  SJU was led by Rob Pimpinella (2-4, 3 RBI) who had two hits, including an RBI triple in the fourth inning.  Also with two hits for the Hawks were Mike Gentile (2-4, 2 RBI) and Jeremy Jakubowski (2-3, RBI) as Gentile had a pair of RBI singles and Jakubowski added an RBI single.  
    
The Lancers were led by Mooney (2-3) who had two hits while senior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (0-0, RBI) provided the lone LU run with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.  Sophomore Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (0-4) took the mound loss while pitching the first 3.0 innings and allowing two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts.  Saint Joseph’s Jason Hessler (1-0) earned the victory with a 7.0 inning complete-game effort, allowing five hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
