CENTRAL FLORIDA BOX SCORE

ORLANDO, Fla. – Longwood University softball dropped two games to close out the University of Central Florida Tournament today. The Lancers, who are now 2-5 on the season, fell to Boston University 4-3 in bracket play and then dropped a 3-1 decision to Central Florida in the consolation game. The contest against Boston University was a continuation of the game that was postponed due to darkness yesterday, February 19. LU will be back in action February 25-27 when they partake in the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Classic. Longwood will play two games on the opening day; facing UMBC at noon and UNC Greensboro at 4 p.m.

The Lancers began the day finishing their contest against the Terriers. The game was postponed yesterday due to darkness knotted at 3-3 going into the top of the seventh. After a three-up three-down seventh inning by Longwood, BU’s Tyler Benson hit a triple down the leftfield line and then scored the winning run when she crossed home plate on a wild pitch by senior pitcher Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas). Steele took the loss for the Lancers, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits, while striking out four and walking five.

In Longwood’s 3-1 setback to host Central Florida, the Golden Knights scored all their runs in the bottom half of the third to break up a scoreless game. The Lancers scored their lone run in the fourth inning when junior Becca Walker/Gainesville (Stonewall Jackson) scored after a throwing error by Central Florida’s right fielder. Beside Walker, who went 1-for-3 in the game, LU was led by freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) who connected on two hits, stole one base and was hit by a pitch. Freshman Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) took the loss for Longwood, giving up three runs, on six hits, while striking out four and walking one in 6.0 innings of work.
