Baseball Drops Series Finale At #6 South Carolina 13-3

Sophomore Tyler Ames Has Two Hits Against Nationally-Ranked Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 13-3 baseball decision at nationally-ranked #6 and perennial NCAA Division I Top Twenty program South Carolina Sunday at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia.  The Lancers dropped to 1-7 this season while the Gamecocks improved to 3-0 with the victory.  Longwood will play again this Tuesday, Feb. 15, hosting VMI in its home opener at Lancer Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m..

The University of South Carolina is ranked #6 in this week’s Sports Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll after posting a 53-17 record in 2004 while advancing to the College World Series.  The Gamecocks scored four runs in both the first and second innings to secure the series finale and three-game sweep of the Lancers.  Longwood scored a run in the third inning, and added two runs in the fourth inning.

South Carolina got three hits each from Cory Vanderhook (3-4, RBI) and Steven Tolleson (3-5, 3 RBI), while Brendan Winn (1-4, 2 RBI) added a home run for the Gamecocks.  Senior Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-4, RBI) and sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-4) each collected two hits for the Lancers with Mooney having a double and an RBI.  Senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (1-3, RBI) also had an RBI single for Longwood.
    
Freshman Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) (0-2) took the pitching loss with the first 1.2 innings and allowing seven hits and five earned runs with two strikeouts.  Wynn Pelzer (1-0) earned the win for South Carolina with 2.0 scoreless innings of middle relief, yielding no hits with two strikeouts.
    
Longwood and South Carolina were meeting for the first-time ever this weekend, and the Gamecocks were the highest ranked opponent ever faced by the Lancers.
