FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 62-43 men’s basketball decision to visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday in Willett Hall. Thomas Bailey led the Islanders (17-6) with a game-high 20 points, while sophomore Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) scored 14 points for the host Lancers (1-25). Longwood will play again Monday, Feb. 14, hosting UMKC in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored the first eight points of the game before Sumter scored the first Longwood basket at 14:50 (8-2). The Islanders extended their advantage to 27-12 with 5:49 left in the first half as Bailey tallied 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. The Lancers, however, rallied with a 9-2 run to close to within 29-21 at 3:52 behind a couple of baskets inside from junior Chad Kosmo/Northport, Maine (Maine Central Institute). TAMU-CC outscored LU 8-2 over the remainder of the opening half to lead 37-23 at the intermission.
Longwood trailed 43-30 at 14:22 of the second half before the Islanders ran off 14 unanswered points to take a 57-30 lead with 9:47 left to play. TAMU-CC’s outburst included a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays, one by Corey Lamkin (9:47) and the other from Taurean Mitchell (12:13). The Lancers again fought back with 10-straight points to make the score 57-40 at 5:08 as Kosmo scored five points. A basket from Lamkin (1:36) and a three-pointer from Bailey (0:35), his fourth of the game, sandwiched around a three-pointer from Sumter (1:01) provided for the final outcome.
Sumter’s team-high 14 points included two three-pointers for Longwood. Kosmo finished with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for the Lancers, his first collegiate double-double. Sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook), the team’s leading scorer (15.6), was limited to seven points and seven rebounds while making just 3-13 shots from the field. LU shot 28% (18-64) from the field, including 17% (4-24) on three-pointers, and 43% (3-7) at the line.
Bailey added eight rebounds to his game-high 20 points, including 4-6 three-pointers, for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Lamkin finished with 12 points and five rebounds for the Islanders, while Mitchell added nine points and five assists. TAMU-CC shot 51% (24-47) from the field, including 39% (5-13) on three-pointers, and 100% (9-9) at the line.
Longwood and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are each competing as NCAA Division I Independent programs. The Islanders play at Northwestern University of the Big Ten Conference Monday, Feb. 14.
