COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 4-1 baseball decision at nationally-ranked #6 and perennial NCAA Division I Top Twenty program South Carolina Saturday at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia. The Lancers dropped to 1-6 this season while the Gamecocks improved to 2-0 with the victory. Longwood and South Carolina will play the three-game series finale on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1:30 p.m..
The University of South Carolina is ranked #6 in this week’s Sports Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll after posting a 53-17 record in 2004 while advancing to the College World Series. The Gamecocks secured the outcome with a run in the third inning and two more runs in the seventh inning. Longwood had tied the contest at 1-1 with a run in the second inning.
The Gamecocks got a two-run homer in the seventh from Michael Campbell (2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) who had two hits, while Davy Gregg (3-5, 2 runs) added three hits. Sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-4, RBI) had an RBI double for the Lancers, scoring junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (2-3) who also collected two hits. Freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (1-1) added a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning for LU.
Sophomore transfer Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (0-1) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 solid innings and allowing just three hits and one earned run with four strikeouts against one of the nation’s premier teams. Zac McCamie (1-0) earned the win for South Carolina with the first 6.0 innings, yielding seven hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. Brent Marsh (1) earned his first save with the final 1.0 inning on the mound, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
Longwood and South Carolina are meeting for the first-time ever and the Gamecocks are the highest ranked opponent ever faced by the Lancers.
