LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 65-52 men’s basketball decision at VMI Thursday night in Lexington. The Keydets (6-15), led by Matt Coward with a game-high 18 points, shot 57% from the field while stopping a 13-game losing streak. The Lancers (1-24), led by sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) with 12 points, lost their 13th-straight game. Longwood will play again this Saturday, Feb. 12, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Willett Hall beginning at 3 p.m..
At VMI, Longwood led 11-9 at 14:25 of the opening half as Jefferson scored five quick points and junior Chad Kosmo/Northport, Maine (Maine Central Institute) scored four points. VMI, however, scored eight unanswered points to lead 17-11 with 11:12 left in the first half. The Keydets led 21-18 at 6:58 before going on a 13-4 run to lead 34-22 at 1:46. It appeared the Lancers had narrowed the advantage to 34-26 in the final seconds of the period but Coward made a buzzer-beating three-pointer for a 37-26 halftime lead.
VMI extended its lead to 44-28 early in the second half at 16:33, but Longwood quickly responded to pull to within 44-36 with 13:38 remaining as freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews) scored five points. The Keydets again added to their advantage and led 58-45 at 4:16, yet the Lancers battled back once more to within 60-52 in the final minute on a three-pointer from sophomore Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford). VMI secured the final margin with 5-6 free throws.
Jefferson added three assists to his team-high 12 points for Longwood. Kosmo finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and three blocks for the Lancers, while freshman Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench. LU shot 34% (22-65) from the field, including 23% (5-22) on three-pointers, and 43% (3-7) at the line.
Coward added eight rebounds and five assists to his game-high 18 points for VMI. Fred Robinson finished with 13 points off the bench, while Reggie Williams had 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Keydets. VMI shot 57% (25-44) from the field, including 57% (4-7) on three-pointers, and 50% (11-22) at the line.
