BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an 87-71 men’s basketball preseason exhibition win past visiting Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday night in Willett Hall. The net proceeds from the benefit game (initial totals had the night’s gross at more than $7,000) will go to the “Families for Farmville” charity organization’s hurricane relief efforts. The fund-raiser was the brainstorm of third-year Lancer head coach Mike Gillian. Longwood will open its 2005-06 regular season at the University of Nebraska November 18 in the John Thompson Foundation Classic.
Longwood pulled away from a stubborn Hampden-Sydney squad in the second half after an opening 20 minutes that ended with a 42-42 halftime deadlock, including an early 21-12 Tiger lead at 11:10. The Lancers, however, took control in the final period with a 21-5 run that erased a 47-46 deficit (17:43) and put the hosts ahead 67-52 with 10:10 remaining. Junior Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. (Fashion Institute) and freshman Bryan Butler/Woodbridge (Potomac), pictured at left, each scored six points during the run, including a capping three-point field goal from Morgan. The Tigers were only able to narrow the margin within 67-59 at 8:57 before another LU outburst sealed the outcome, this time a 12-5 run for a 79-64 lead with 4:09 on the clock. Butler added five points during the run, as did junior Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook), including his capping trey. The Lancers closed with four of five late free throws, sandwiched around a pair of baskets from junior Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams).
Jefferson finished with 22 points to lead Longwood, followed by Butler with 17 points, and Morgan with a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sumter and senior Chad Kosmo/Northport, Maine (St. Petersburg) each had 10 points as Kosmo also had a double-double with 11 rebounds. The Lancers shot 51% (34-67) from the field, including 40% (6-15) on three-pointers, and 65% (13-20) at the line. LU outrebounded the visitors 46-30, including 22 boards at the offensive end of the floor, as the hosts physically wore down H-SC with its size and athleticism over the final 20 minutes.
Hampden-Sydney was led by Troy Kaase with a game-high 27 points, including 19 in the first half. Mike Edwards added 15 points, followed by Drew Prehmus with 14 points, and Matt Green with 10 points. The Tigers shot 40% (23-57) from the field, though just 29% (9-31) in the second half, including 26% (5-19) on three-pointers, and 65% (20-31) at the line.
The exciting exhibition game between the two schools located about five miles apart was played before a near-capacity and noisy crowd of 2,319 in Willett Hall.
