BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Longwood University took a 2-0 women’s soccer shutout victory past Howard University Sunday morning in Fort Wayne, Indiana during the United Soccer Conference (USC) Tournament consolation match. The win enabled the Lancers to complete their campaign with a final record of 7-9-1, while the Bison were 4-13-1. Longwood was playing its second season against NCAA Division I competition, and finished 5-1-1 over the last seven contests while improving upon a 2004 record of 5-13. The Lancers were also 2-0 during their inaugural season of affiliation in the single-sport USC.
Against Howard, the two teams played to a scoreless first half and late into the match before freshman Beth Shade/Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Cedar Cliff), pictured at left, scored the game-winning goal at 81:55. Shade’s decisive goal, her third this season, was unassisted as she blasted a cleared-ball out top into the upper 90 of the net. The Lancers struck again with an insurance goal at 86:36 when another freshman, Ingrid Hale/Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield), scored on a header to the far post from a corner kick opportunity. The assist came on the corner from junior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam), her team-best fourth assist of the season -- also Hale’s first collegiate goal.
Longwood took an 18-16 advantage in shots, and had a 5-0 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the full 90 minutes in front of the net with eight saves while posting her third shutout this fall for the Lancers. Lindsey Walton played the first 45 minutes in goal for Howard, making three saves while Jessamyn Perkins played the final 45 minutes with five saves for the Bison.
“It was good to finish the season with a win,” explained 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer (135-75-9). “The first half was tough, but we were able to break them down in the second half and score the goals.
“I want to acknowledge our seniors (Melissa Cary, April Lockley, Tiffany Rice) who have done so much for our program during this transition to Division I.”
Whitmore and senior Melissa Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) were each named to the USC All-Tournament Team.
