BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 3-2 come-from behind men’s soccer victory over visiting High Point University this evening at Lancer Field in Farmville to close out the 2005 season. The Lancers, who with the win won their fourth-straight contest, closed out the season with a overall record of 7-10-2, while the Panthers fell to 1-13-3. Sophomore midfielder Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) scored two late goals to help propel Longwood to the victory.

High Point took the 1-0 lead 15:26 into the first half when Longwood scored an own goal. Cole Atkins of HPU served a free kick into the box that a Lancer player inadvertently deflected into the goal. HPU increased its lead to 2-0 seven minutes later when Chris Archer scored on a cross by Tyler Bash.

The Lancers cut the Panther lead to 2-1 when sophomore forward Elvis Cosic/Richmond (J.R. Tucker) scored his second goal of the season at the 33:03 mark. Classmate Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) started the play off with a perfect pass down the sideline to senior midfielder Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel (Mercer County C.C.). Malca, who let the ball run through his legs, one-touched a cross into the box that Cosic placed past High Point goalkeeper Adam Ross.

Longwood then tied the game 23 minutes into the second stanza. Harney blasted a shot from 25-yards out that snuck just inside the right goal post.

The Lancers capped off their impressive comeback with Harney’s second goal of the night and third of the season. Harney collected a loose ball 20-yards out and fired a shot past Ross to help Longwood earn the victory.

Longwood took the 12-6 advantage in shots, and the 6-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) made two saves in the contest for Longwood, while Ross also collected two for High Point.
