FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Longwood University dropped a 1-0 women’s soccer road decision at IPFW Friday night in Fort Wayne, Indiana during the United Soccer Conference (USC) Tournament semifinals. The loss stopped a five-match unbeaten streak (4-0-1) as the Lancers fell to 6-9-1 overall, while the host Mastodons improved to 5-11-3 overall. Longwood will complete its season on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 9 a.m. against Howard University in the USC Tournament consolation match in Fort Wayne.

At IPFW, the two evenly-matched teams played to a scoreless first half before Anika Apar scored the only goal of the contest at 51:02, assisted by Nicole Halls.

“They outplayed us in the first half,” explained 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “We came out stronger in the second half, but one good ball beat us deep and proved the difference in the match.”

IPFW took a narrow 13-12 advantage in shots, though Longwood had a 4-2 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the full 90 minutes in front of the net with two saves for the Lancers. Shannon Lynn also played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Mastodons, making four saves while posting the shutout.

Longwood’s consolation contest against Howard will be a re-match of last week’s (October 30) regular-season finale won by the Lancers (3-1) in Washington, D.C.. The Bison lost to Utah Valley State by a score of 4-0 in the other USC tournament semifinal Friday evening in Indiana.
