FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 93-49 men’s basketball victory past visiting Virginia-Wise Saturday afternoon in Willett Hall; stopping a 22-game losing streak dating back to last season (19). The Lancers (1-3) were led by sophomore Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) and junior Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. (Fashion Institute) with career-high efforts of 15 points and 13 points, respectively, while the Highland Cavaliers (4-5) were led by Carlos Goodwyn with nine points. Longwood will play again on Monday, November 28, hosting the College of William and Mary at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall.
Longwood started fast against NAIA UVA-Wise, leading 13-3 just 3:53 into the game as freshman Bryan Butler/Woodbridge (Potomac) scored seven quick points. The lead was 22-8 at 12:04 as Morgan scored inside, and the Lancers increased their advantage to 36-15 with 4:58 remaining in the half behind a 14-7 run with junior Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) finishing it with three-straight baskets. LU led 48-28 at the intermission as Smith added a couple of baskets, including a steal and dunk late in the half.
Longwood extended the margin in the second half against the outmanned visitors with a 17-2 run at the start to lead 65-30 with 14:14 on the clock, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder) and junior Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford). The Lancers led 76-34 at 8:23, and 83-41 at 4:09 as Jefferson and sophomore Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews) each scored five points. Smith’s three-pointer made it 90-46 with 1:56 left, the largest lead of the contest, and the final margin remained 44 points.
Longwood placed six players in double-figure scoring as Smith’s career-high 15 points included a perfect 6-6 on field goals, including 1-1 on three-pointers, and 2-2 at the free throw line. He also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, and had career-highs of three assists and three steals as well. Morgan added eight rebounds, equaling his career-high to go with his career-high 13 points for the Lancers. Butler finished with 12 points, three assists, and three steals; Jefferson had 11 points and three assists; while Barrett and Pistoljevic each contributed 10 points. Longwood shot 47% (38-81) from the field, including 31% (8-26) on three-pointers, and 60% (9-15) at the free throw line. The Lancers forced UVA-Wise into 21 turnovers in the contest, while committing just nine miscues, and out-rebounded the visitors 51-32.
In addition to Goodwyn’s nine points for UVA-Wise, Parker Gemmell, Jarred Soles, and Zydrunas Rackauskas each contributed seven points for the Highland Cavaliers. The visitors shot 33% (16-49) from the field, including 27% (4-15) on three-pointers, and 68% (13-19) at the line.
