BOX SCOREFARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 2-1 overtime men’s soccer victory over visiting Appalachian State University this evening at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers, who with the win won their third-straight contest, improved their overall record to 6-10-2, while the Mountaineers fell to 7-9-1. Longwood will close out its 2005 season when it welcomes High Point to Farmville for Senior Day on Saturday November 5. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm.
After 89 minutes of scoreless action, the Lancers took the lead when midfielder Miq Umar/Herdon (Chantilly) scored his first collegiate goal with 58 ticks remaining in regulation. Classmate Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) had flicked the ball towards goal which Appalachian State goalkeeper Alex Dufty misplayed. The ball skirted off Dufty’s hand to the waiting foot of Umar; who blasted a shot into the open net for the 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers didn’t fold as J.T. LaBruyere tied the game when he scored a goal with two seconds remaining in regulation. A foul by Dixon at half field gave Appalachian State a free kick with just seconds remaining. Dufty placed the free kick into Longwood’s box to LaBruyere who hit a shot that went off the goal post and into the goal.
Longwood scored the golden goal game-winner 4:46 into the first overtime period when sophomore forward Todd Runey/Midlothian (Collegiate) headed in a free kick taken by classmate Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird).
Appalachian State took a 11-9 advantage in shots, while Longwood held a slight 6-5 edge in corner kick opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) made two saves in the contest, while the team registered three. Dufty finished the contest making two saves for the Mountaineers.
