FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University men’s soccer sophomore Todd Runey/Midlothian (Collegiate) has been named to the 2005 Atlantic Soccer All-Conference First-Team, while senior Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel (Mercer County C.C.) earned Second-Team accolades. Hartwick College swept all of the major awards as Tyler Hemming was named Player of the Year, John Paul Boyle Rookie of the Year and Ian McIntyre Coach of the Year.
Runey, a 5-10 forward, finished the year playing and starting in all 19 contests for the Lancers. He scored a team-high eight goals, while adding one assist for a team-high 17 points. In conference action, Runey started all six games, scoring three goals and tallying one assist. For the season, Runey scored two game-winning goals; at Mount St. Mary’s (9/24, 2-1) and versus Appalachian State (11/2, 2-1). He finished the season third in the ASC in points per game (0.89) and goals per game (.42).
Malca, a 5-10 midfielder, played in all 19 games for Longwood, getting the starting nod 15 times. He finished the season with a team-high three assists, while adding three goals for nine total points. The senior captain tallied a goal against NJIT (10/14), and the game-winning goals against both Oneonta (10/16) and Philadelphia (10/30).
“To finish second in our first year of conference play is a great testament to the progression this team has made over the last few years,” said head coach
Jon Atkinson. “As a newcomer into the conference our players will have to be patient until Longwood becomes more familiar with other programs in the ASC to receive the recognition they rightfully deserve, but I am delighted to see recognition for two of our players in the form of first-team honors and second-team honors. I am sure both Todd Runey and Leon Malca will be first to recognize these accolades could not be achieved without the fantastic effort their teammates gave this season.”
In addition to these two all-conference honors, three Longwood players earned ASC weekly accolades throughout the season. Runey and sophomore Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) both earned Player of the Week accolades, while classmate Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) was named Goalkeeper of the Week.
Longwood finished the 2005 campaign with a 7-10-2 overall record and a 3-2-1 record in its initial season in the ASC.
