Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Augustine's 83-64 In Exhibition Game

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University earned an 83-64 women’s basketball preseason exhibition win past visiting Saint Augustine’s College Thursday night in Willett Hall. Longwood will open its 2005-06 regular season hosting the Lancer Invitational November 18-19. The Lancers will play Maryland-Eastern Shore in their opener on Friday, November 18 at 8:00 p.m.

Longwood used a strong first half to pull away from visiting Saint Augustine’s. Leading 11-8 at the 14:10 mark, the Lancers went on a 23-11 run over the next 12 minutes to hold a 17-point cushion at 34-17. Sophomore forward Leigh Mascherin/Greensboro, N.C. (Ragsdale) drained two three-pointers, while senior forward Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) scored seven points during the run to help the Lancers pull away from the Lady Falcons.

Longwood kept Saint Augustine’s at a distant over the final two minutes of the first half and went into the locker room leading 41-24.

The Lady Falcons sliced the Lancer lead to 12 points, 43-31, early in the second stanza, but the Lancers buckled down a scored the next 14 out of 19 points to hold a 21 point advantage with less than 12 minutes to play in the game. Saint Augustine’s was unable to recover and Longwood earned the 19-point victory.

Mason finished with game-highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Mascherin and freshman forward Cassandra Smith/Fredericksburg (Massaponax) who both added nine points. Senior guard Jessica Wilkerson/Roanoke (Northside) chipped in eight points, five assists and one steal. The Lancers shot 50.0% (30-60) from the field, including 41.2% (7-17) on three-pointers, and 76.2% (16-21) at the charity stripe. LU outrebounded the visitors 42-30.

Saint Augustine’s was led by Valicia Brown with a team-high 19 points. Terrica Morris added 17 points, and both Laconya Polk and Rakenya Haynes added eight points. The Lady Falcons shot 64.3% (20-55) from the field, including 28.6% (6-21) on three-pointers, and 64.3% (18-28) at the line.
