Field Hockey Falls To Radford 1-0 In Conference Action

Sophomore Cristin Newbold Finishes With Four Shots in Setback

RADFORD, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 1-0 first hockey decision to host Radford University in Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) action this afternoon in Radford. The Lancers fell to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the NorPac, while the Highlanders improved their overall record to 6-7 and now holds a 3-1 record in conference. Longwood will be back in action October 15 when they play at Stanford. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. 

Radford’s winning goal came when Hope Bates cracked a shot on goal that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh). As the ball was being cleared, Tiffany Church of Radford intercepted the clear with a deflection to Stephanie McLamb, who placed a shot in the right side of the cage at 46:39. 

The Lancers had an opportunity to tie the game late in the second half on a short corner, but sophomore Cristin Newbold’s/Norfolk (Maury) shot was saved by Highlander goalkeeper Natalie Bowen.

Radford held a slight 9-8 advantage in shots and a small 9-7 edge in penalty corners. Schmitz made four saves for the Lancers, while Bowen made six for Radford.
