FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 3-1 men’s soccer victory past visiting Philadelphia University Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers, with their second-straight win, improved their overall record to 5-10-2, finishing 3-2-1 in their first year of Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) action, while the Rams dropped to 4-11-1 overall, 1-2-1 in the ASC. Longwood will play again this Wednesday, November 2, hosting Appalachian State University at Lancer Field beginning at 6 p.m..
Against Philadelphia in conference competition, Longwood got on the scoreboard early when sophomore Ryan Lerow/Mechanicsville (Atlee) took a loose ball on the left side and blasted a shot into the upper 90 from 30-yards out at 3:46. The Rams, however, came right back to tie the match at 1-1 when Devon Klipp one-touched the ball past the keeper and into the net at 5:49, assisted by Gianni Cimini. The Lancers took a 2-1 advantage at the intermission after senior Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner at 30:04 when he took a pass from freshman Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) and beat the keeper one-on-one. The hosts added an insurance goal early in the second half at 47:32 when sophomore Todd Runey/Midlothian (Collegiate) finished a perfectly-executed corner kick opportunity from classmate Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) with a header into the back of the net.
Longwood took a 14-7 advantage in shots, and had a 9-4 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) played the full 90 minutes in front of the net with four saves for the Lancers, including a penalty-kick stop early in the match. Mike Wallover also played the full 90 minutes in goal for PU, making five saves.
