WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Longwood University took a 3-1 women’s soccer conference road victory at Howard University Sunday evening in Washington, D.C.. The Lancers, with their third-straight win, improved to 6-8-1 overall, 2-0 in the United Soccer Conference (USC), while the Bison dropped to 4-11-1 overall, 2-1 in the USC. Longwood has finished its regular season and was undefeated in October (4-0-1). The Lancers will compete in the USC Tournament this upcoming weekend, Nov. 4-6, in Fort Wayne, Indiana hosted by IPFW.
At Howard, the two teams played to a scoreless first half before freshman Ashlee McConnell/Carlisle, Pa. (Carlisle), pictured at left, scored the first goal of the match at 48:55. The Bison, however, responded with a corner-kick goal at 56:46 by Angel Ughiovhe to tie the contest at 1-1. The Lancers struck again at 66:23 when freshman Brooke Brumby/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) scored on a corner kick opportunity from senior Melissa Cary/Bristow (Brentsville). LU added an insurance goal at 85:02 when junior Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) blasted a goal into the back of the net. Complete statistics, including assists, were not available Sunday night.
“We faced a very fast, athletic, and organized Howard team,” explained 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “We had to use patience against them, but finally settled down and scored some goals.
“We’ve finished this month undefeated, and hopefully will carry this momentum into our conference tournament.”
Longwood took an 8-6 advantage in shots, though Howard had a 9-3 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the full 90 minutes in front of the net with five saves for the Lancers. Lindsey Walton also played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Bison, making five saves as well.
