BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 women’s soccer shutout victory past visiting Charleston Southern University Thursday night at Lancer Field in Farmville as senior Melissa Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) tallied the game-winner at 72:27. The Lancers, with their second-straight win, improved to 5-8-1 overall, 3-0-1 in their last four contests, while the Buccaneers dropped to 7-10 overall. Longwood will play again this Sunday, October 30, at Howard University for a United Soccer Conference match in Washington, D.C. beginning at 4 p.m..
Against CSU of the Big South Conference, the two teams played to a scoreless first half on a cold senior night as the temperature dropped into the 40’s. Longwood controlled the action from the start, however, and finally put the decisive goal on the scoreboard midway through the second half when Cary finished to the far post from a perfectly-executed corner kick serve by junior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam).
“Tonight was all about our three seniors; Melissa Cary, April Lockley/California, Md. (Leonardtown), and Tiffany Rice/Virginia Beach (Kellam),” explained 12th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “They have done so much for the program and for us to be able to send them off with a victory in our last home game, and for Melissa to score the game-winning goal, is obviously pretty special.
“As a team, we have hit a nice stride here in October (3-0-1). We’re defending well as a group and creating chances in the front third and scoring goals. Hopefully, we can keep it going on Sunday and also go do some damage in our upcoming conference tournament (Nov. 4-6).”
Longwood took a 15-3 advantage in shots, and had an 11-4 margin in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the full 90 minutes in front of the net with two saves while posting her second shutout this season for the Lancers. Miki Wilson also played the full 90 minutes in goal for CSU, making 10 saves. Longwood finished 3-2-1 against members of the Big South Conference this season.
