FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 1-0 men’s soccer victory over visiting Howard University this evening in Atlantic Soccer Conference action at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers improved their overall record to 4-10-2 and 2-2-1 in the ASC, while the Bison fell to 2-8-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference. Longwood will close out its ASC slate this Sunday, October 30 when they welcome Philadelphia to Lancer Field. Game time is slated for Noon.

After a scoreless first half, Longwood started to put the pressure on Howard. Senior midfielder Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel (Mercer County C.C.) had a great scoring opportunity early in the second stanza when he received the ball inside the box and blasted a point-blank shot on Bison goalkeeper Jason Williams. Williams reacted quickly and was able to make the save.

The Lancers had another golden opportunity with less than 20 minutes to play in the contest when sophomore forward Todd Runey/Midlothian (Collegiate) flicked a shot on goal that Williams quick hands were again able to save.

Longwood finally broke the scoreless tie at the 83:42 mark. The Lancers were awarded a penalty kick after a Bison defender was called for pushing a Longwood player inside the box. Sophomore midfielder Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) calmly placed the penalty kick into the lower right hand corner of the goal.

The Bison pressured hard the last six minutes and had one last opportunity to tie the game. Lamar Hyde dribbled down the end-line and crossed a ball to teammate Haribo Kamara-Taylor. Kamara-Taylor one-touched a shot towards goal that freshman defender Nate Van Arsdale/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) cleared off the goal line to secure the victory.

Longwood took a 9-6 advantage in shots, while each team finished with four corner kick opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) made two saves in the contest to register his third career shutout. Williams finished the game making four saves for the Bison.
