BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 3-1 women’s soccer upset victory past visiting UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville. The home triumph for the Lancers stopped a six-match winning streak by the visiting Bulldogs who have already clinched at least a share of the Big South Conference regular-season title. Longwood improved to 4-8-1 overall, 2-0-1 in its last three contests, while UNC Asheville dropped to 10-4 overall, remaining 6-1 in the Big South. The Lancers will play again Thursday, October 27, hosting another BSC member in Charleston Southern University at Lancer Field beginning at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
Against UNCA, Longwood took a 1-0 advantage when freshman Brooke Brumby/Gaithersburg (Quince Orchard) took a pass from sophomore Kristina Reed/Spotsylvania (Chancellor) and slipped the ball past Bulldog keeper Shanna Brown at 23:37. The Lancers controlled the opening half of action and maintained their 1-0 advantage at the intermission.
The visitors came out strong in the second half and tied the match at 1-1 when Stephanie Feltis one-touched the ball past LU sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) at 47:38, assisted by Hilary McKay. Longwood came right back, though, and tallied the eventual game-winner at 51:35 when sophomore Vanessa Congdon/Charlotte, N.C. (Charlotte Catholic) -- pictured at left -- finished a deflected header by junior Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) from a corner-kick opportunity. The decisive goal was the first of Congdon’s career. The Lancers added an insurance goal late when Brumby notched her second goal of the match at 84:41 on another one-touch finish from a cross by junior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam) who had beat the defender wide.
Longwood took a 10-7 advantage in shots, and had a 5-3 margin in corner kicks, while Whitmore played the full 90 minutes in front of the net with four saves for the Lancers. Brown also played the full 90 minutes in goal for UNCA, making five saves.
