BOX SCOREGARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- Longwood University dropped a 4-1 men’s soccer decision to Adelphi University this afternoon in Atlantic Soccer Conference action in Garden City, N.Y.. The Lancers fell to 3-11-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the ASC, while the Panthers improved their record to 3-10-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Longwood will be back in action on Wednesday, October 26 when they welcome Howard to Lancer Field. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
Adelphi jumped out on top early, scoring a goal at the 6:26 mark. Dieudonne Nonga cracked a shot that deflected off a Longwood defender and into the goal. Rob Philippou was credited with the assist.
The Panthers scored two more goals before halftime to hold a 3-0 advantage. Ron Forman scored an unassisted goal in the 21st minute, while Philippou scored his first of two goals at the 25:04 mark.
Philippou closed out Adelphi’s scoring 13 minutes into the second stanza when he hit a shot from 22 yards out that sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) was unable to save.
Longwood broke up the shutout in the 61st minute when sophomore forward Todd Runey/Midlothian (Collegiate) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Senior defender Dana Shaffer/Norfolk (Maury) chipped the ball over the Panther defense to Runey, who slipped the ball past Panther goalkeeper Michael Hurley.
Adelphi took an 8-5 advantage in shots and held a 5-0 edge in corner kick opportunities. Youmans and junior goalkeeper Tyler Marsh/Mechanicsville (North Carolina Wesleyan) combined to make one save for the Lancers, while Hurley finished with two saves for the Panthers.
