Field Hockey Defeats St. Francis (Pa.) 6-2; Begins Conference Play Friday Against Appalachian State

Senior Forward Alexis Ramey Scores Three Goals Over a Four Minute Span

RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 6-2 field hockey victory over visiting St. Francis (Pa.) at the Cary Street Field on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University this afternoon. The Lancers improved their record to 3-7, while the Red Flash fell to 0-10 on the year. Longwood will be back in action Friday, October 7 when they host Appalachian State in Richmond at VCU for its first Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference match. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.

The Lancers jumped out on top early, scoring a goal at the 5:54 mark. Sophomore forward Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) scored the unassisted goal to put LU up 1-0. Senior forward Alexis Ramey/Westminster, Calif. (Marina) then scored a hat-trick over a four minute span to give Longwood a 4-0 cushion at intermission. Ramey’s first goal came at 26:02 off an assist by junior defender Katie Murphy/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne). Murphy had cracked a shot that Ramey flicked in past St. Francis goalkeeper Kristen Onto.

Ramey scored her second goal of the half at 27:53, and then finished off her first half hat-trick when she scored with less than five minutes to play off a pass from senior forward Julie Price/Stafford (North Stafford).

St. Francis (Pa.) broke up Longwood’s shutout eight minutes into the second stanza when Leigh-Ann Conroy scored an unassisted goal.

The Lancers answered back, scoring goals at 49:30 and 52:26, respectively, to push their lead to 6-1. Senior defender Shannon Ratte/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) scored her first goal of the season, while sophomore midfielder Erin Murphy/Stafford (North Stafford) scored her first collegiate goal off an assist by classmate Mary Freeman/Fredericksburg (Stafford).

The Red Flash closed out the scoring when Erin Davis scored off an assist by Sam Nonweiler at 63:07.

Longwood held the 18-6 advantage in shots, while St. Francis (Pa.) held the 6-5 edge in penalty corner opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) made two saves for the Lancers, while Onto and Erin Reifsteck combined for seven saves for the Red Flash.
