BOX SCORESTOCKTON, Calif. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-1 first hockey decision to host Pacific in Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) action this afternoon in Stockton, Calif. The Lancers fell to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the NorPac, while the Tigers improved their overall record to 7-9 and now holds a perfect 5-0 record in conference. Longwood will be back in action Saturday, October 29 when it closes out its NorPac slate with a game at Davidson. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
Pacific jumped out on top early, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of action. Kaily McGrath scored the Tigers first goal 50 seconds into the contest off an assist by Dana Walsh, while Jennifer Chaney scored the eventual game-winner at the 6:31 mark.Â
Longwood cut the lead to 2-1 when sophomore forward Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) scored her sixth goal of the season at the 14:23 mark. Senior forward Julie Price/Stafford (North Stafford) was credited with the assist; her second of the season.Â
Pacific scored three goals over the last 16 minutes of the first stanza to gain a 5-1 cushion. Â Vianney Campos scored an unassisted goal at the 19:30 mark, while Marissa Atilano scored at 21:02 and Chaney tallied her second goal of the afternoon at 27:40.
Atilano closed out the scoring for the Tigers when she found the back of the cage 13 minutes into the second half. Elizabeth Blount assisted on the goal.Â
Pacific finished the contest with a 26-6 advantage in shots and held a 14-6 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh), the reigning NorPac Defensive Player of the Week, finished the contest making four saves, while Valerie Niles and Kelly Miller combined for three saves for the Tigers.
