HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Longwood University battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie in women’s soccer action Monday night at High Point University in North Carolina. The Lancers are now 3-8-1 overall, remaining 1-0 in the United Soccer Conference, while the Panthers dropped to 8-5-1 overall. Longwood will play again this Sunday, October 23, hosting the University of North Carolina-Asheville at Lancer Field beginning at 2 p.m. in Farmville.
At High Point of the Big South Conference, Longwood took the early 1-0 advantage when sophomore Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) scored unassisted at 23:54 when she drove a shot over the keeper’s head from approximately 30 yards. It remained 1-0 at the intermission.
High Point tied the match at 1-1 when Karoline Straby scored with an assist from Leslie Long at 71:35. The Panthers continued to pressure down the stretch but could not score again as the two teams went to overtime. The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 through two, 10-minute overtime periods.
“It was a physical battle and we had to weather the storm,” explained head coach Todd Dyer. “High Point is the most direct team we have played this season, and our team was able to stick with it. Though the team is disappointed with the result, I am proud of the way we played tonight.”
High Point took a 19-7 advantage in shots, though each team had nine corner-kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the entire 110 minutes in front of the net with seven saves for the Lancers. Erica Brockmyer played the full 110 minutes in goal for the Panthers, making one save.
