BOX SCORE

STANFORD, Calif. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-0 first hockey decision to host Stanford University in Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) action this afternoon in Stanford, Calif.. The Lancers fell to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the NorPac, while the Cardinals improved their overall record to 5-11 and now holds a 3-2 record in conference. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, October 16 when they play at UC Berkeley. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET.

Stanford took an early 1-0 lead at the 9:31 mark when Caroline Hussey scored an unassisted goal. Less than 10 minutes later the Cardinals increased their lead to 2-0 when Liz Robinson, who had received the ball from Lynsday Erickson, was able to place a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh). Stanford closed out its scoring at the 21:43 mark off a penalty stroke taken by Julia Drewes.

“I am extremely disappointed with our play today,” stated head coach Nancy Joel. “I expected a better showing coming into this contest. I do have to give a lot of credit to Ava and her strong performance in goal. She endured a barrage of shots today and only allowed three goals, while making 17 strong saves.”

Stanford finished the contest with a 40-0 advantage in shots and held the 18-1 edge in penalty corners. Schmitz 17 saves, eight saves in the first stanza and nine in the second, was a career-high.
