Women's Soccer Wins United Soccer Conference Opener Past South Carolina State 4-0

Redshirt Junior Stacy Crites Scores Her First Goal Of The Season Against Bulldogs

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 4-0 women’s soccer shutout victory past visiting South Carolina State University Friday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville. It was the first-ever United Soccer Conference match for the Lancers who stopped a seven-game losing streak with the home triumph. Longwood improved to 3-8 overall, 1-0 in the USC, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-12 overall, 0-2 in league play. The Lancers will play again Monday, October 17, at High Point University in North Carolina beginning at 7 p.m..

Against SCSU, Longwood took the early 1-0 advantage when junior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam) beat a defender and the keeper with an assist from sophomore Vanessa Congdon/Charlotte, N.C. (Charlotte Catholic) on the cross to the middle at 13:13. It would prove to be the game-winning goal for Crane, also her first goal of the season, while it was Congdon’s first career assist.

The Lancers added two more goals in the first half as freshman Ashlee McConnell/Carlisle, Pa. (Carlisle) tallied her first career goal, unassisted, at 25:55 when she went one-on-one to the far post. Junior Stacy Crites/Manassas (Osbourn) followed with her own unassisted goal at 39:51, moving the net on a rebound and the score was 3-0 at the intermission. It was Crites’ first goal of the season as well.

Longwood scored its final goal early in the second half as freshman Brooke Brumby/Gaithersburg (Quince Orchard) went one-on-one and tapped the ball past the keeper at 45:47. It was Brumby’s fourth goal of the season.

Longwood took a commanding 29-4 advantage in shots, and had an 11-0 margin in corner-kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the first 69:00 in front of the net with one save, while redshirt-freshman Emily Grove/Farmville (Prince Edward) played the final 21:00 with one save as well for the Lancers. Ciji Sims played the full 90 minutes in goal for the visitors, making 10 saves.
