Men's Soccer Ties New Jersey Institute of Technology 1-1 In Double-Overtime

Leon Malca Scores His First Goal of the Season

FARMVILLE Va. -- The Longwood University men’s soccer team tied the New Jersey Institute of Technology 1-1 in double-overtime in Atlantic Soccer Conference action this afternoon in Newark, N.J.. The Lancers now hold a 2-8-2 overall record and are 0-1-1 in the ASC, while the Highlanders are 1-6-5 overall and 0-1-2 in conference. Longwood will be back in action Sunday, October 16 when they welcome ASC opponent Oneonta to Lancer Field. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, NJIT scored four minutes into the second half to take the lead. Dylan Broadley sent in a direct kick that Eddie Romero headed past sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus). The Lancers responded in the 74th minute on a goal by senior midfielder Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel (Mercer County C.C). Malca, who received the ball from sophomore midfielder Mike Negash/Charlottesville (Charlottesville), hit a shot from 10 yards out to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in overtime, but the Lancers did have thee shots on goal in the extra periods, including a header by Malca which was saved by NJIT goalkeeper Collin Cunning. 

The Lancers finished the game with the 20-8 advantage in shots and held a slight 10-9 edge in corner kicks. Youmans finished the contest with four saves, while Cunning made 12 saves for NJIT.
