OREM, Utah – Longwood University dropped a 75-57 men’s basketball decision at Utah Valley State Friday night in Utah. The Wolverines (5-9) outscored the Lancers (1-19) 16-3 over the final 6:34 to secure the win, getting a game-high 28 points from Ronnie Price. Longwood, led by sophomore Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, will complete its 16-day, seven-game road trip at Northern Colorado Monday, Jan. 10, at 9 p.m. ET.
Longwood, playing its 15th game away from home this season, fell behind early at 5-2 (18:51) before scoring nine-straight points to lead 11-5 at 17:32 as sophomore Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) nailed back-to-back three-pointers and Sumter added one basket from beyond the arc. The Lancers maintained the advantage at 16-10 (14:22) before Utah Valley State ran off 16 unanswered points to lead 26-16 with 11:09 left in the first half. UVSC took its largest lead of the period at 31-18 (7:18) before LU used a 13-7 run to narrow the margin to 38-31 at 1:57 while trailing 40-33 at the intermission.
Utah Valley State still led 49-37 with 16:31 remaining before sophomore Leland Beale/Poquoson (Oak Ridge, N.C. Military Academy) sparked a 13-4 run to bring Longwood within 53-50 at 12:13. Beale came off the bench to score nine of the 13 points during a span of 3:56. A basket from Sumter had the Lancers within 56-52 at 11:19, and despite not being able to convert on the next four possessions, the visitors only trailed 59-54 with 7:51 left to play. Price, averaging 25.1 points, scored nine points over the final 5:14 before exiting with just under a minute on the clock as the Wolverines controlled the final 6:34.
Sumter’s double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds was his second of the season, adding four assists for Longwood. Beale finished with a season-high 13 points to equal his career-high, all coming in the second half on 6-9 shooting from the field, while freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrew’s) added 12 points, a career-best seven assists, and six rebounds for the Lancers. Pistoljevic had 10 points, including the two three-pointers, while leading scorer Michael Jefferson (16.0) was limited to only three first-half points while playing 39 minutes. LU shot 39% (24-61) from the field, including 23% (3-13) on three-pointers, and 55% (6-11) at the line.
Price’s 28 points came on 9-19 shooting from the field, including 3-8 on three-pointers, and 7-8 at the line, adding seven rebounds for Utah Valley State. Pierre Thomas added 15 points, and Richard Troyer came off the bench to score 13 points for the Wolverines. UVSC shot 45% (25-56) from the field, including 47% (9-19) on three-pointers, and 80% (16-20) at the line.
