FARMVILLE, Va. -- Appalachian State University rolled to an 89-59 win past host Longwood University in men’s basketball Monday night in Willett Hall. The Mountaineers (9-9) led 45-29 at halftime and never looked back while winning their first road game this season in nine attempts. D.J. Thompson led ASU with 15 points, including 5-6 three-pointers, as the visitors made 14 treys in the contest. Sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) led the Lancers with a game-high 20 points. Longwood will play again Friday, February 4, when Northern Colorado visits Farmville at 7 p.m..
Appalachian jumped ahead 11-2 at 18:05 of the first half behind a trio of three-pointers, including two by Thompson. Longwood scored six unanswered points to pull within 11-8 with 16:50 left in the opening half but that was a close as it would get. The Mountaineers, on the strength of seven first-half treys, led by as many as 20 points late in the period before taking the 16-point halftime advantage (45-29).
Longwood pulled to within 45-30 in the first minute of the second half, however, ASU extended its lead to as many as 44 points (81-37, 7:05) while cruising to its first road victory this season. The Mountaineers, who equaled their entire win total from a year ago (9-21), shot 58% (18-31) from the field in the second half, making 70% (7-10) of their three-pointers. The Lancer reserves did outscore the visiting ASU reserves 11-5 over the final 3:22 for the final margin.
Jefferson’s game-high 20 points included 8-10 free throws while adding five rebounds for Longwood. Freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence (St. Andrew’s) was the only other double-figure scorer with 13 points, also adding five rebounds for the Lancers. LU shot 34% (22-64) from the field, including just 1-18 on three-pointers, and 58% (14-24) at the line.
In addition to Thompson’s 15 points to lead Appalachian State, Herbert Jones added 14 points while making 7-9 field goals. Nathan Cranford contributed a career-high 12 points, while Noah Brown had 11 points, and Cortney Polk added a career-high 10 points for the Mountaineers. ASU finished at 55% (36-65) from the field, including 56% (14-25) on three-pointers, and 43% (3-7) at the line.
