Men's Basketball Falls 102-93 In Double-Overtime At Quinnipiac; Host Bobcats Make 40-58 Free Throws

HAMDEN, Conn. – Longwood University dropped a 102-93 double-overtime men’s basketball decision at Quinnipiac Sunday in Connecticut.  The Lancers (1-17) were whistled for 40 fouls while the Bobcats (5-5) shot 58 free throws, making 40, including 17-21 in the two extra periods.  Longwood was led by sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds, adding eight assists.  Quinnipiac was led by Rob Monroe with 41 points, including 16-19 free throws.  The Lancers play at Hartford Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m..

Longwood led 75-70 with 44-seconds left in regulation before Quinnipiac forced overtime at 75-75 with five unanswered points in the final 26-seconds, including a game-tying layup from Karl Anderson with 4.6-seconds on the clock.  The Bobcats led 85-82 with 44-seconds left in the first OT, and were ahead 87-84 on a pair of free throws at 0:02 before Jefferson banked-in a 53-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to force the second extra period tied at 87-87.  QU took advantage of a 12-2 run in the second OT to lead 98-89 with 1:05 remaining en route to its home win.

The closely-played contest had nine lead-changes and 17 ties throughout the 50 minutes.  The physical affair saw five players disqualified with five fouls each for Longwood.  At the end, the Lancers had three other players with four fouls each.  Quinnipiac accumulated 29 fouls with two player disqualifications, and the Bobcats made 9-11 free throws over the final 2:46 of the game, and 28-41 after the intermission.

Quinnipiac, which had defeated Longwood 89-62 earlier this season in Farmville (Nov. 27), led 32-30 at halftime with its largest lead being 5-0 at 18:13 to begin the game.  The Lancers fought back with six unanswered points to lead 6-5 (16:18) and the battle had begun.  The opening 20 minutes alone had five lead-changes and seven ties.  Sophomore Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) led LU with 10 first-half points.

Longwood took its first lead of the second half at 37-35 (15:39) on a basket from sophomore Leland Beale/Poquoson (Oak Ridge, N.C. Military Academy).  Following a 37-37 tie, the Lancers used a 26-13 run over 7:12 to lead 63-50 with 8:52 remaining.  Jefferson scored nine points during the run, and Pistoljevic added a pair of three-pointers as LU seemed to have control with the 13-point lead, its largest of the contest.

Quinnipiac, however, scored 10-straight points, getting seven from Monroe and the Bobcats were right back in the game at 63-60 and 6:06 on the clock.  Longwood still led 70-63 at 2:50 on another jumper from Jefferson after five-straight points from freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews) before the hosts closed with a 12-5 run to tie the game at 75-75 through regulation.

Jefferson’s 14 rebounds tied his career-best, and his eight assists were a new career-best to go along with his team-high 24 points.  Pistoljevic finished with a season-high 19 points, including a season-best five three-pointers, while Barrett posted his first collegiate double-double of 15 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.  Beale contributed 11 points, while sophomore Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) also added 11 points, nine rebounds, and six assists to tie his career-best for the Lancers.  LU shot 43% (35-81) from the field, including 23% (7-30) on three-pointers, and 49% (16-33) at the line.

Monroe’s 41 points were a career-best to go along with nine rebounds and six assists.  Anderson finished with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Craig Benson added 11 points for the Bobcats.  QU shot 41% (26-68) from the field, including 21% (6-29) on three-pointers, and 69% (40-58) at the line.
