Women's Basketball Falters On The Road; Drops 83-56 Decision At Campbell

Junior Jessica Wilkerson Scores Team-High 14 Points In Setback

Longwood University dropped a 83-56 women’s basketball decision to Atlantic Sun Conference member Campbell University Monday evening at the Carter Gymnasium in Buies Creek, N.C.. The Lancers, who fell to 7-8 on the season, were led by junior guard Jessica Wilkerson/Roanoke (Northside) who scored 14 points, grabbed two rebounds, had one assist and one steal. Kristin Vuckovich and Adrienne Rieley led the host Camels, who improved to 6-8, with there 17 and 16 points, respectively. LU will be back in action Thursday, January 20 when they play Liberty University in Lynchburg. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Longwood led for the first 10 minutes of the game, but with the score 15-13 at the 10:11 mark Campbell started to take over the game. Sarah Fox hit one of two free throws for the Camels, while Rieley hit a jumper to give CU the lead at 16-15. Campbell then went on to score 21 points and was able to limit Longwood to just one basket and two free throws over the final eight minutes of the first stanza to hold a commanding 37-19 advantage over LU at intermission.

The Camels used hot shooting in the second half to keep the Lancers at bay. Longwood cut Campbell’s lead to 16 twice, but CU hit an impressive 78.3% (18-23) of its shots from the field, including 75.0% (3-4) on three-pointers and 70.0% (7-10) from the line in the second stanza to earn the lopsided victory.

Besides Wilkerson, Longwood was led by junior forward Amber Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) who scored 11 points, all coming in the second half, and added a game-high seven steals, five rebounds and two assists. Senior forward/center Catherine Dunn/Aberdeen, N.J. (St. John Vianney) and sophomore forward Rebecca Charles/South Charleston, W. Va. (South Charleston) both chipped in eight points. The Lancers shot 29.5% (18-61) from the field, including 8.3% (2-24) on three-pointers, and was 72.0% (18-25) from the free throw line.

In addition to Vuckovich and Rieley, the Camels also got a helping hand from Fox and Marlena Murphy who scored eight points a piece. Campbell finished the game shooting 67.4% (29-43) from the field, including 50.0% (3-6) on three-pointers, and was 75.9% (22-29) from the charity stripe.
