BOX SCORE
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- ACC member Virginia Tech took a 2-0 decision past visiting Longwood University in women’s soccer Monday night at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium in Blacksburg. The unbeaten Hokies (4-0) needed two second-half goals to defeat the determined Lancers (0-4). Longwood will play again this weekend, September 10-12, at the Five Star Tournament hosted by Mercer University in Georgia.
Following a scoreless first half on a rain soaked field, Virginia Tech finally got on the scoreboard with a goal at 65:39 when Erin Moore scored with a double-assist from Ashley Stinson and Heather Hallberg. The Hokies sealed the outcome with a second goal at 73:04 as Stinson notched an unassisted goal.
Longwood freshman keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) kept the game close with nine saves while playing the entire match in front of the net. Virginia Tech did take a 23-5 advantage in shots, and a 6-3 edge in corner-kick opportunities, while Hokie keeper Mallory Soldner made one save.
“Our spirit is still high and we’re playing better each game,” said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer. “Our back four are starting to play in-sync and were starting to possess the ball longer and get forward for our own chances. With as hard as we’re playing, we deserve a positive result and I think we’ll get one soon.”
