RICHMOND, Va. -- After a scoreless first half, Rider University scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Longwood University 3-0 in a field hockey match Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field in Richmond. The Lancers (0-2) will be back in action tomorrow when they host Georgetown University at Crenshaw Field. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m..
The Lancers and Broncs battled tough in the first half, but neither team was able to break the scoreless tie. Rider broke the goal line and gave the Broncs a 1-0 lead when junior Courtney Bertos scored at the 48:40 mark of the second half. The Broncs increased their lead to 2-0 when freshman Stephanie Walker scored on a rebound of a penalty corner. Rider capped off its scoring when senior Christina Ang scored with time expiring off a penalty corner.
The Lancers were held to two shots in the match, while the Broncs finished with 25, including 15 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Julie Patterson/Esmont, Va. (Monticello) finished with 15 saves for Longwood.
