HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-2 men’s soccer decision to Elon University Sunday in Harrisonburg during the second round of the JMU Tournament. The Phoenix improved their record to 3-3-3, while the Lancers are now 0-8 this season. Longwood will play again this Tuesday night, September 28, hosting Radford University at Lancer Field in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m.. It’ll be the first home match of the season after eight consecutive road contests.
Against Elon, the Lancers fell behind 2-0 at the intermission after a pair of first-half unassisted goals from Brennan Farrell at 15:46 and 44:26. The Phoenix extended their lead to 3-0 with another goal in the second half at 57:39 by Douglas Boateng, also unassisted.
Longwood, however, battled back with two consecutive goals by sophomore Chris Miller/Chesapeake (Hickory) at 64:15 and junior transfer Leon Malca/Hertzeliya, Israel (Mercer Co. CC-N.J.) at 79:17 to close the margin to 3-2. Malca’s goal was also unassisted, while senior captain Stuart Bertsch/Norfolk (Maury) and freshman Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) combined for the double-assist to Miller. The Lancers, though, could not manage a late game-tying goal while suffering their fifth one-goal loss of the campaign.
Longwood took a 19-5 advantage in shots, and a 10-4 edge in corner-kick opportunities. Bertsch led the Lancers with six shots, while freshman keeper Matt VanOekel/Chesapeake (Great Bridge) went the distance in front of the net with three saves. Elon’s Taylor Saxe made six saves for the Phoenix.
