DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson University took a 5-1 decision past visiting Longwood University in a field hockey match Sunday in North Carolina. Longwood, who fell to 1-5 on the season, will play again Wednesday, September 22, when they host Radford University at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
The Wildcats (2-4) led 3-0 at halftime off of goals by Eleanor Cowley, Kayli Maxwell and Emily Davis. Cowley scored seven minutes into the contest, while Maxwell tallied her goal at the 16:14 mark and Davis earned her goal with just over ten minutes to play in the first half.
The Lancers cut the score to 3-1 just 2:14 into the second stanza when junior Alexis Ramey/Westminster, Calif. (Marina) tallied her first goal of the season off an assist by senior Lorrie Watts/Fredericksburg (Stafford). Davidson charged back, scoring 16 seconds after Ramey did to push its lead to 4-1. Maxwell finished the scoring for the Wildcats, claiming her second goal of the contest at the 45:45 mark of the game.
Senior goalkeeper Julie Patterson/Esmont (Monticello) and freshman goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) combined for 10 saves on the day. Patterson finished with six saves, while Schmitz tallied four.
