BOX SCORE
MACON, Ga. -- Longwood University earned its first win of the season in women’s soccer Sunday, defeating Georgia Southern University 1-0 during the second round of the Five Star Classic hosted by Mercer University. The Lancers (1-5) gained the victory as freshman Katie Young/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) scored her first collegiate goal. Longwood will play again Wednesday, September 15, at Big South Conference member Coastal Carolina University near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
“It was a total team effort, and gives us a good sense of the commitment necessary to be successful at this level,” said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “We found a way to get it done, and hopefully, we can carry it forward.”
Young’s game-winning goal at 23:07 came about when sophomore Lexi Torrice/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) played the ball through on a cross inside the 18 to Young who was able to one-touch the ball beyond the Georgia Southern keeper into the far post. Longwood freshman keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) went the distance in front of the net, making eight saves, while posting her first collegiate shutout. Whitmore played rock-solid and was very composed and calm under pressure, according to Dyer.
The Eagles did take a 12-11 advantage in shots, though the Lancers had a 4-3 edge in corner-kick opportunities. GSU keeper Laura-Ashley Harris made five saves.
