RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Commonwealth took an 11-1 decision past visiting Longwood University in field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field in Richmond. The host Rams (5-1) got four goals from Carlot Verloop, including three scored in the second half. The Lancers (1-3) will be back in action Wednesday, September 15 when they face James Madison in Harrisonburg at 7:00 p.m..
Virginia Commonwealth scored 2:50 in the first stanza when Verloop notched her first goal of the contest on a double assist by Casey Smith and Ashley Cadwallader. Less than three minutes later, Daphne Bravenboer scored to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage. Virginia Commonwealth scored three more times before halftime to gain a 5-0 lead.
The Lancers scored their lone goal in the 56th minute when freshman Mary Freeman/Fredericksburg, Va. (Stafford) scored her second goal of the season off a double assist by junior Marina Sizow/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) and senior Lorrie Watts/Fredericksburg (Stafford) to cut the score to 7-1. Virginia Commonwealth closed out the contest with four unanswered goals.
For Longwood, senior goalkeeper Julie Patterson/Esmont (Monticello) and freshman Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) combined for 21 saves. Patterson tallied 15 saves and Schmitz made six. The Lancers held the 7-5 advantage in penalty corners, while the Rams took the 35-10 advantage in shots.
