ROCK HILL, S.C. – Gardner-Webb scored the lone goal of the game 18 minutes into the second half to earn a 1-0 victory over Longwood University in a men’s soccer match Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C. The Lances, who were playing their second game of the Wingate Inn Classic, fell to 0-5 on the year, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-2 overall. Longwood will be back in action September 19 when they travel to North Carolina for a match against Appalachian State. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m..
For the third-straight game, the Lancers held their opponent scoreless in the first half. Longwood finished the first stanza with four shots, while Gardner-Webb edged them out with five. Freshman goalkeeper Matt VanOekel/Chesapeake, Va. (Great Bridge) was impressive for the Lancers, stopping four shots by the Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb was able to break the scoreless tie at the 62:02 mark of the contest when senior Chris Williams scored on double assist by freshmen Chapman Walsh and Andy Donaldson. Williams, who received a cross in the middle of the box, controlled the ball and placed a shot past VanOekel.
The Lancers finished the game with nine shots, including four on goal, while the Bulldogs tallied 10 shots, six on net. VanOekel ended the day with five saves and Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Tyler Kettering made four.
VanOekel, senior Stuart Bertsch/Norfolk, Va. (Maury) and freshman Boone Prentice/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) were all named to the Wingate Inn Classic All-Tournament Team.
