Women's Soccer Falls At Mercer 3-1 In Five Star Classic

MACON, Ga. -- Mercer University scored two second-half goals en route to a 3-1 decision past visiting Longwood University in women’s soccer Friday during the opening round of the Five Star Classic in Georgia. The host Bears improved to 2-3 against the young Lancers, now 0-5, who started seven freshmen and sophomores. Longwood will play again Sunday, September 12, against Georgia Southern University in the second round of the tournament hosted by Mercer.

Mercer went ahead early in the contest when Lindsey Wegrzyn scored unassisted from a direct kick just 38-seconds into the match. Longwood, however, came right back to tie the game at 1-1 when sophomore Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) tallied her first goal of the season on a corner-kick chance at 4:51, assisted by freshman Tessa Kofler/Stafford (North Stafford) - Kofler’s first collegiate assist. The two teams went into the intermission tied at 1-1.

The Bears scored early in the second half at 46:37 when Darcy Kibler was assisted by Catie Marshalek on another corner, and the hosts sealed the outcome with a third goal at 61:10 on a penalty-kick from Margaux Asteghene. Longwood split time in front of the net between freshman keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (51:07) with two saves and sophomore keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) (38:53) with one save. Mercer had a narrow 12-10 edge in shots, with an 11-4 advantage in corner-kick opportunities, while Bear keeper Lauren Burch made seven saves.
