RICHMOND, Va. -- Monmouth University scored a goal with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and earn a 2-1 victory over Longwood University in the Lancers field hockey season-opener Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field in Richmond, Va. The visiting Hawks (1-1) scored the game-winner at the 60:50 minute mark when freshman Annie LePresti scored on an pass from senior Kelly Balady. The Lancers will be back in action Saturday, September 4 when they host Rider at Crenshaw Field.
Monmouth took the early 1-0 advantage when Balady scored on a penalty corner taken by senior Katie Levy. The Lancers managed to tie the game just two minutes into the second half when freshman Cristin Newbold/Norfolk, Va. (Maury) scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from senior Lorrie Watts/Fredericksburg, Va. (Stafford).
Longwood held the 21-13 advantage in shots and the 7-4 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Julie Patterson/Esmont, Va. (Monticello) finished the match with nine saves, including two on penalty strokes.
