BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Elon University took a dramatic season-opening 2-1 overtime decision past host Longwood University in women's soccer Friday afternoon at Lancer Field.  The visiting Phoenix (1-0) scored the game-winner just ahead of the final buzzer in the second 10-minute extra period when sophomore Monica Houseworth tallied the goal on a corner-play serve from freshman Tina Longo at 109:59.  The Lancers (0-1) will be back in action this Sunday, August 29, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk beginning at 1 p.m..

Elon had taken an early 1-0 advantage when sophomore Alisa Petitt scored just 3:07 into the match, unassisted, as she was too fast for Longwood sophomore keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove), who finished with five saves.  The Lancers managed to tie the contest at 1-1 at the intermission as freshman Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) scored her first collegiate goal on a header from another corner-play serve, this time from LU sophomore Whitney Slack/Leesburg (Loudoun County) at 43:18.

The two teams battled scoreless and evenly throughout the second half and almost through the two extra periods.  Elon took a 16-11 edge in shots, and had an 8-4 advantage in corners.  EU senior keeper Kara Zagol had four saves while playing the entire match.  Storrie went the distance in front of the net for Longwood as well.

Following the ODU match, Longwood will play at Radford University September 3 at 7 p.m..
