SALEM, Va, -- Longwood picked up its second win of the West Virginia Wesleyan softball tournament Friday afternoon, defeating Mount Olive 11-2 in nearby Salem. The Lancers have now won 12 of the last 13 games played and with the win improve to 31-11 on the season. Longwood was scheduled to take on Alderson-Broaddus at 5 p.m.
Against Mount Olive, Longwood scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. The Lancers added five insurance runs in the fifth frame, followed by two more in the sixth to secure its second win of the tournament. Junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) led the 11-run attack with her 3-4 performance at the plate, including a single, a triple, and a two-run homer – just a double short of the cycle – with four RBI, while freshman Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) went 2-for-4. Steele (15-7) also earned the win, scattering seven hits in six innings of work.
